Centering Equity - Empowerment - Knowledge

The education system of this country is steeped in systemic racism.

We hope to bring understanding in how to navigate those systems, if your child or family requires additional support that is not being provided.

We seek to empower families of color to step into a leadership role occupying spaces that have been reserved for white and/or affluent families.

We share knowledge, culture and perspective in hopes of learning and growing closer as a community.

About the PTO

Mission

Together with our families we seek to build community, support our teachers, and center inclusive programs that build on the purpose of Licton Springs  K-8. We primarily do this in three ways:

  1. Build relationships by hosting community wide events to bring students, parents, and other family members together

  2. Provide resources and activities for the teachers, staff, and students to facilitate learning

  3. Support families within our community with resources, necessary material items, and extra-curricular activities

Structure

Unlike many PTAs around the Seattle School district our PTO is not registered as a nonprofit organization. This does not mean our PTO makes a profit, it is purely an IRS tax distinction. The PTO classification (you may also hear it referred to as a Site Council) is a more affordable alternative to the high dues associated with being an official PTSA.  Additionally the PTO/Site Council designation allows the PTO greater freedom in our mission as we are not constrained by the rules of a larger organization.

There is an added complexity to being a PTO. We must manage all funds associated with the PTO under a different umbrella; one that is designated as a nonprofit organization. That is where our fundraising partner, Sir Herbert Read Consortium, comes in.
