The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People (MMIWP) movement raises awareness about the disproportionate rates of violence and disappearance experienced by Indigenous women, girls, Two-Spirit people, and boys. This movement aims to draw attention to the systemic issues that lead to these tragic outcomes, including historical oppression, racism, discrimination, colonialism, inadequate policing, and lack of access to justice. At Seattle Public Schools, MMIWP Awareness Week is April 29th through May 4. LSK8 is extending this awareness through the entire month of May. Our school's Racial Equity Team (RET) is helping to bring this topic into the classrooms with age appropriate curriculum, an assembly on May 29, and a school-wide march on May 31.
Here is a list of community events we would like our LSK8 families to join us in. Let's show our community that we stand with them in solidarity by attending these events.
